Organizational Structure and Government Dependency influencing formal Standard Setting Organizations innovation activity

As standard setting organizations compete on participants, technologies and market influence the constant search for new input technologies and experts can be considered as an innovation process within standardization. Almost all standard setting organizations have ‘R&D’-departments whose primary task is to identify trends, new technologies and new stakeholders in order to attract these for their standardization services.

To get a better understanding of how formal standardization organizations work, we want to identify possible effects, analyzing the participation of ISO members in technical committee (TC) in relation to their closeness to their governments (dependent vs independent) and their organizational structure (centralized vs decentralized). We want to answer the following research questions:

What factors and intentions influence the organizational structure of formal SSOs? How do organizational structure and government (in-)dependency influence formal SSOs activities? Does a certain organizational structure promote standardization activity and the ability to innovation in formal SSOs?

The qualitative study is sought to contain the following steps: Literature review, Survey (structured online- /email-questionnaire/ ISO-Members), statistical analysis, conclusions and recommendations for action.

We are looking for an interested master student to help carry out this study as a part of his or her master's thesis.
