Service standardization as strategic tool within a service economy

"Services made in Germany" is more than just a phrase. Two facts are behind it: Services are meanwhile more important for economic success than products and in order to maintain the title of the export world champion, Germany has to push forward services and needs to adopt the positive image of "Made in Germany" within the service industry.

The technological leading position of Germany originates from several reasons. One is the aspect of standardization enabling efficient diffusion of innovations that backs up the comparative advantage of a highly developed industrial nation. Moreover, Germany’s DIN is cutting-edge within European and international standardization offering the German industry a head start within international competition.

The questions beg to be asked whether these advantages can be used within the service industry and to what extent? Which potential can be utilized? What influences service standardization and what are the impacts of service standards?

In order to gain insights into this seemingly promising field the research project "DISIDI" was set up. The project is funded by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), started in January 2010 and ends in December 2012.
