BIP 2020
For the 9th time, the Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) was commissioned by the Technologiestiftung Berlin to acquire empirical data on the innovation-related activities of Berlin’s economy. The full report on the 2020 Berlin Innovation Panel is available here and presents selected results of the survey:
Berlin's private sector spent more on research and development than last year. However, expenditures on innovation and overall innovation intensity in Berlin are slightly lower than last year. Revenue shares with new products are also slightly lower than last year, both Berlin- and nation-wide.
The biggest share of innovation expenditure in Berlin is still spent by large companies. Notably, the SME share of innovation spending accounts for 25% in Berlin, which is significantly higher than the nationwide average (14,7%). In key indicators such as innovation participation and innovation intensity, Berlin's private sector proves to be above average in almost all size categories.
The importance of digital tools as part of company business models has risen further on, e.g. as digital platforms for selling products or services are used more frequently. More complex applications like artificial intelligence and machine learning still take a back seat as part of business models.
