BIP 2018

For the seventh time, the Technology Foundation Berlin has commissioned the Centre for European Economic Research to collect empirical data on innovation in Berlin's economy and is presenting a report on this basis. The full report is available here [1]. The Innovation Survey Berlin 2018 was conducted at the same time as the German Innovation Survey. The field phase started in mid-February 2018. The Berlin Innovation Survey 2018 is based on 1,821 responses from Berlin-based industrial companies and selected service industries. The report presents selected results of the Innovation Survey 2018:

  • Compared to the previous year, innovation expenditures in Berlin increased by 388 million Euros in 2017.
  • More than half of Berlin-based companies (54 %) invested between 2015 and 2017 in new products, services or improved processes.
  • The Berlin-based companies innovated at a similar level to the German average.
  • Berlin companies were able to increase the share of sales with new products by 4 percentage points to 16.8 % in 2017.
  • 71 % of Berlin companies searched in 2017 for new employees.
  • Cooperation with research institutions played a significant role for innovation in Berlin.

At EUR 3,869 million, the Berlin companies recorded the highest expenditure for new and further developed processes and products since the start of the Berlin Innovation Panel. Innovation spending also increased nationwide (+8,972 million euros)(see Figure 1).

Compared to the previous year, the share of innovative companies decreased by 6 percentage points (Germany: -2 percentage points). This means that in 2017 the share of innovators was the lowest since the beginning of the Berlin Innovation Panel. The decline is attributable to less successful product innovations (-5 percentage points). While the proportion of innovators among large companies increased slightly (+3 percentage points), the proportion of innovative SMEs from Berlin fell (-6 percentage points). The share of Berlin companies with successful launches of process innovations rose by 2 percentage points(see Figure 3).

71% of Berlin companies were looking for new skilled workers, compared to the national average (65%), which was 6 per cent lower. More than every second vacancy was filled late, inadequately or not at all. Filling positions for academics with a MINT degree was particularly difficult for Berlin companies (see Figure 4).

23% of Berlin companies cooperated with academic institutions in the period 2015-2017. Large companies in particular were characterised by a larger number of scientific collaborations than the national average (Berlin: 250-999 employees: 20.3 per company; 1,000 and more employees: 78.8 per company; Germany: 250-999 employees: 5.0 per company; 1,000 and more employees: 36.8 per company) (see Figure 5).
